AI-RAN describes the use of artificial intelligence alongside radio access network technology. The RAN is the part of a cellular system connecting devices to radio sites, where software must manage changing signal conditions, interference, capacity and tightly timed transmission decisions.

The AI-RAN Alliance groups work into three broad areas. AI-for-RAN uses models to improve radio performance and operations. AI-and-RAN explores running AI workloads and RAN functions on shared computing infrastructure. AI-on-RAN uses network-edge resources to provide AI services close to users. These are related approaches, not one finished product.

Potential benefits include smarter resource scheduling, power savings and better fault detection. Challenges include inference delay, reliability, data quality, power consumption, operational complexity and the need to test models under realistic radio conditions. A successful laboratory demo does not establish a deployment-wide improvement.

AI-RAN is relevant to both current networks and future 6G design; it is not itself proof that a network is 6G. Evaluate claims by their measured outcome, the hardware used and the AI system's role rather than by the label alone.
