The International Telecommunication Union is a United Nations specialized agency concerned with digital communications. Its radiocommunication work helps countries coordinate spectrum and satellite-orbit use across borders, reducing the chance that one service interferes with another.
For cellular generations, the ITU-R IMT process sets international frameworks and performance requirements. The framework for prospective 6G systems is called IMT-2030. Expert groups define evaluation methods and examine candidate radio technologies against agreed requirements.
This is related to, but different from, 3GPP. The ITU develops international frameworks and radio regulations with its member states, while 3GPP produces the detailed specifications implemented by mobile equipment and network vendors. An ITU performance target is not a measured result from a deployed phone.
When a 6G claim refers to ITU approval, identify the exact document, stage and date. A draft technical requirement, an adopted framework and a completed evaluation are different milestones and should not be described as if they were the same.
