An affiliate link contains an identifier that helps a seller or affiliate network attribute a visitor or qualifying purchase to a publisher. When the attribution rules are met, the publisher may earn a commission without charging the reader directly.
For example, a software comparison might link to a vendor's signup page using a tracked URL. The publisher could receive payment when a reader subscribes, completes a trial or makes a purchase, depending on the program's agreement.
An affiliate relationship creates a financial incentive that can affect which products are recommended or how they are described. Attribution windows, refunds, ad blockers and program terms also mean that clicking a link does not always result in a commission.
Disclose the financial relationship clearly and close to the recommendation; in US advertising guidance, simply labeling a link 'affiliate link' may not adequately explain the connection. Keep assessments independent and review claims against current product information.
