Microsoft bundles most of its security updates for Windows, Office and other products into that one day, so that administrators can plan for it. Some other vendors line their own release schedules up with it.
Predictability helps both sides. Defenders can schedule testing and deployment. Attackers can compare patched and unpatched files to learn what was fixed, so the clock starts running on release day. Microsoft also issues out-of-band updates when a problem is too urgent to wait for the calendar.
The same pattern showed up in the Atlassian case in October 2026. watchTowr compared the vulnerable and the patched packages to find the root cause of CVE-2026-21589, and attackers began trying the flaw within about two hours of watchTowr's technical write-up.
Put the monthly release in your calendar, test it in staging within days, put flaws that are already being exploited first, and keep an emergency path for out-of-band updates.
